Common Injuries in Running
Plantar Fascitis
Symptoms:
- Ongoing, chronic pain on the bottom of the foot or along the sides of the foot
- Pain getting out of bed or after sitting for a period of time
Causes:
- Runners with high or low arches
- Increasing running mileage too quickly
- Poor footwear
- Biomechanical imbalances
Achilles Tendonitis
Symptoms:
- Pain and/or swelling above your heel
- Pain standing on toes
- Dull pain in the heel which disappears with ice
Causes:
- Training on hilly roads
- Tight or weak calf muscles
Shin Splints
Symptoms:
- Pain down the front of the lower leg
- Pain can be sharp and achy
Causes:
- New runners
- Runners doing too much too quickly
- Poor footwear
- High or low foot arches
Runner’s Knee
Symptoms:
- Pain in or outside the knee with walking or running
- Twinges with running which dissipate with continued movement but later returns after your run is finished
- Pain worse with sitting
Causes:
- Biomechanical imbalances, such as tight hamstrings and hip flexors
Hamstring Injuries
Symptoms:
- Sudden sharp strong pain in the back of the thigh
- Chronic achiness and tightness that forces you to slow down
Causes:
- Tight hamstrings
- Overly flexible hamstrings
Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Symptoms:
- Pain from the outside of the knee and radiates to the hip
- Pain gets worse walking down hill or down stairs
Causes:
- Running frequently downhill
- Increasing mileage too quickly
- Biomechanical imbalances
Back Pain
Including herniation of disks, arthritis in the back, sprained and strained muscles
Symptoms:
- Pain, stiffness, spasms and swelling in the back
- Possible numbness, tingling and weakness related to nerve involvement
- Pain in the back when taking the correct posture to swing
- Inability to bend over or get up from a chair
- Unable to twist
Causes:
- Running on a hard surface
- Weak back muscles
- Poor posture
- Poor footwear
