Common Injuries of Golfers
Trigger Finger
Symptoms:
- Locking of the pointer finger
- Spasms of the pointer finger
Causes:
- Improper grip on the club
- Gripping the club too tight
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Symptoms:
- Tingling and numbness in the palm side of the hand(s)
- Weakened grip holding a club
- Clumsiness handling the ball
Causes:
- Improper grip on the club
- Repetitive motions resulting in stress on the wrist
Wrist Impaction Syndrome
Symptoms:
- Pain and tenderness on the top of the wrist at the top of the backswing
Causes:
- Repetitive motions resulting in stress on the wrist
DeQuervain’s Tendinitis
Symptoms:
- Pain and/or swelling near the base of the thumb.
Causes:
- Improper grip on the golf club
- Repetitive swinging of the golf club resulting in stress on the wrist
ECU Tendon Subluxation
Symptoms:
- Wrist pain and hand weakness with increased pain at the pinky finger with certain wrist movements
Causes:
- Repetitive swinging of the golf club resulting in stress on the wrist
- Improper grip on the golf club
Golfers Elbow
Symptoms:
- Pain and/or swelling on the inside of the elbow
- Pain radiating down into the arm
Causes:
- Repetitive swinging of the golf club resulting in stress on the elbow
- Pain with backswing and at the point of making contact with the ball
Tennis Elbow (More Common for Golfers than Golfers Elbow)
Symptoms:
- Pain and/or swelling on the outside of the elbow
- Pain radiating down into the arm
Causes:
- Repetitive swinging of the golf club resulting in stress on the elbow
- Pain at any point during the swing
Shoulder Pain
Including rotator cuff issues, tear or impingement of rotator cuff, arthritis in the shoulder and instability of the joint.
Symptoms:
- Pain and swelling of the shoulder joint
- Issues with lifting the arm away from the body, over the head
- Shoulder joint locking and not allowing full range of motion
- Pain radiating down into the arm
Causes:
- Biomechanical imbalances
- Weak upper back muscles and over tight chest muscles
- Repetitive swinging of the golf club resulting in stress in the shoulder
