Common Injuries in Fitness Training
Tennis Elbow
Symptoms:
- Pain in the outside of the elbow
- Possible radiation down the arm
- Possible loss of strength in gripping
Causes:
- Lifting heavy weight while extending the arm
Bicep Strain
Symptoms:
- Pain on the front of the shoulder
- Loss of strength in bending the arm
- Pain in the shoulder which worsens with bending of the arm
Causes:
- Lifting heavy weights
Shoulder Impingement Syndrome
Symptoms:
- Decreased range of motion in the shoulder
- Pain in the upper shoulder or upper arm
- Pain when lifting the arm away from the body
Causes:
- Poor posture
- Lifting heavy weights
Knee Pain
Can include arthritis of the knee, torn meniscus, knee cap not tracking properly and ligament issues.
Symptoms:
- Pain, clicking, swelling of the knee
- Pain worse with squatting or walking
Causes:
- Weekend warrior
- Running on a treadmill
- Lifting too much weight
- Poor posture
Hip Flexor Injuries
Symptoms:
- Pain on the front of the hip
- Pain/soreness when lifting the leg forward or climbing up hills or stairs
Causes:
- Running on the treadmill for extended periods of time
- Lifting heavy weights with combined lunges
Back Pain
Including herniation of disks, arthritis in the back, sprained and strained muscles
Symptoms:
- Pain, stiffness, spasms and swelling in the back
- Possible numbness, tingling and weakness related to nerve involvement
- Pain in the back when taking the correct posture to swing
- Inability to bend over or get up from a chair
- Unable to twist
Causes:
- Poor form in a variety of exercises such as spinning class, stationary bike or squats
- Weak back muscles
- Poor posture
Generalized Muscle Tension
Symptoms:
- Generalized pain, achiness and tension anywhere in the body
Causes:
- New to the sport and/or increasing endurance
- Lifting too much weight too soon
- Lack of warming up
- Overdoing your limit
- Improper form
