Common Injuries in Yoga

Tendonitis of the Wrist — Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Symptoms:

  • Pain and swelling in the wrist
  • Pain in flexing or extending the wrist
  • Pain making a fist

Causes:

  • Poses requiring the body’s weight supported by the wrists.

Bursitis of the Elbow

Symptoms:

  • Swelling in the elbow
  • Formation of a fluid-like lump
  • Sensitive to be touched

Causes:

  • Poses which stress the elbows, such as chaturanga

Shoulder Injuries – Tendinitis, Bursitis, Impingement

Symptoms:

  • Inflammation, red, soreness, swelling of tendons in the shoulder joint
  • Biceps can become inflamed and irritated – pain radiating down the front of the arm to the elbow
  • Pain sleeping on the affected shoulder
  • Pain when lifting the arm away from the body

Causes:

  • Poses which shift the supporting muscle into the arms, shoulders and neck, such as down dog
  • Poses requiring over extending or stretching of the shoulder

Knee Pain

Can include arthritis of the knee, torn meniscus, knee cap not tracking properly and ligament issues.

Symptoms:

  • Pain, clicking, swelling of the knee
  • Pain worse with squatting or walking

Causes:

  • Overly deep knee bending in certain poses

Hip Flexor Injuries

Symptoms:

  • Pain on the front of the hip
  • Pain/soreness when lifting the leg forward or climbing up hills or stairs

Causes:

  • Chronic tight hip flexors
  • Poor transitioning between poses
  • Poor flexibility in the hips and hamstrings

Hamstring Injury

Symptoms:

  • Sudden sharp pain in the back of the thigh
  • Pain with bending the knee
  • Decreased range of motion in walking or bending the knee

Causes:

  • Poor flexibility and tight hip flexors
  • Imbalance between quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups
  • Lack of flexibility in poses leading to over extension of the hamstrings

Tendinitis of the Wrist

Symptoms:

  • Pain and swelling on the wrist
  • Location will depend on which tendons have been irritated

Causes:

  • Repetitive motions such as throwing the ball or swinging a bat

Back Pain

Including herniation of disks, arthritis in the back, sprained and strained muscles

Symptoms:

  • Pain, stiffness, spasms and swelling in the back
  • Possible numbness, tingling and weakness related to nerve involvement
  • Pain in the back when taking the correct posture to swing
  • Inability to bend over or get up from a chair
  • Unable to twist

Causes:

  • Poses with rounding the spine, such as forward folds and down dog
  • Lack of flexibility in sitting for poses

Generalized Muscle Tension

Symptoms:

  • Generalized pain, achiness and tension anywhere in the body

Causes:

  • New to the sport and/or increasing endurance
  • Improper form
