Common Injuries in Tennis
Tendinitis of the Wrist
Symptoms:
- Pain and swelling in the wrist
- Pain in flexing or extending the wrist
- Pain making a fist
Causes:
- Repetitive movements, especially flicking the wrist in returning the ball
Tennis Elbow
Symptoms:
- Pain in the outside of the elbow which occurs with hitting a tennis ball
- Possible radiation down the arm
Causes:
- Overuse of the muscles that extend the wrist or bend the elbow
- The elbow absorbs the force of the ball hitting the racket
Bursitis of the Elbow
Symptoms:
- Swelling in the elbow
- Formation of a fluid like lump
- Sensitive to be touched
Causes:
- Repetitive swinging the racket
Shoulder Impingement Syndrome
Symptoms:
- Decreased range of motion in the shoulder
- Pain in the upper shoulder or upper arm
- Pain lifting the arm away from the body
Causes:
- Overhead motions while holding a racket
Hamstring Injury
Symptoms:
- Sudden sharp pain in the back of the thigh
- Pain with bending the knee
- Decreased range of motion in walking or bending the knee
Causes:
- Rapid movements or being hit by the ball
- Poor flexibility and tight hip flexors
- Imbalance between quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups
Knee Pain
Can include arthritis of the knee, torn meniscus, knee cap not tracking properly and ligament issues.
Symptoms:
- Pain, clicking, swelling of the knee
- Pain worsens with squatting or walking
Causes:
- Repetitive motions such as squatting to pick up a ball
- Sudden quick movements
- Movements that twist the knee
Back Pain
Including herniation of disks, arthritis in the back, sprained and strained muscles.
Symptoms:
- Pain, stiffness, spasms and swelling in the back
- Possible numbness, tingling and weakness related to nerve involvement
- Pain the back when swinging the racket
- Inability to bend over or get up from a chair
- Unable to twist
Causes:
- The twisting motions or sudden movements
- Weak back muscles
- Poor posture
Generalized Muscle Tension
Symptoms:
- Generalized pain, achiness and tension anywhere in the body
Causes:
- New to the sport and/or increasing endurance
- Quick sudden moves
