The tarsal tunnel is a tunnel consisting of a thick ligament which protects and maintains a corridor for the posterior tibial nerve.
When the tarsal tunnel becomes inflamed, stretched or impinged, the nerve can no longer move smoothly in the tunnel. This results in compression, squeezing on the posterior tibial nerve or one of its branches – medial, lateral plantar nerves, resulting in pain.

- Bone spur
- Diseases like – diabetes, arthritis.
- Trauma – like an ankle sprain.
