Supraspinatus muscle is a major player in shoulder movement. It runs along the top of the shoulder blade and its tendon attaches to the humerus bone (aka top of the arm bone). Supraspinatus independently prevents the humerus from slipping inside the shoulder joint.
Supraspinatus is one of the team players in the rotator cuff group. When the rotator cuff muscles don’t work as a team, supraspinatus can become fatigued and inflamed. If not treated, can lead to shoulder impingement syndrome.
Causes of Supraspinatus Tendinitis:
- Sport activities involving movement of the arm at shoulder height or above – baseball, basketball, weight lifting.
- Non-sports activities – painters, contractors, plumbers.
- Rotary cuff issues coming from repetitive overhead activity.
- Trauma to the shoulder.
Symptoms of Supraspinatus Tendinitis:
- Deep, dull achy shoulder at rest.
- Intense or sharp pain when putting arm overhead.
- Pain at night, especially when lying on the effected shoulder.
- Weakness in the effected shoulder
- Pain may or may not be present with range of motion, but pain will present with movement in 60 to120 degree movement of the arm.
I approach treating your shoulder pain to your presentation, which involves:
- Analyzing your posture – what imbalances are occurring in the shoulder?
- Discussing potential lifestyle dynamics impacting the effected shoulder.
- Understanding how other factors such as arthritis can aggravate the problem.
- Muscle testing the muscles comprising the rotary cuff for weakness and pain.
- Targeting effected muscles, releasing motor points, trigger points and relaxing the fascia
Providing exercises to continue treatment success between acupuncture treatments.
